The LIFX Dimmer is a Matter-enabled smart wall dimmer that works with both traditional lighting and LIFX smart lights. Depending on how it is configured in the LIFX app, it can provide physical dimming for compatible lighting or smart control for connected LIFX products.

Unlike traditional wall dimmers, the LIFX Dimmer can operate in different load modes, allowing it to either control standard lighting or act as a smart controller while keeping LIFX smart lights continuously powered.

Before You Begin

Before installing your LIFX Dimmer, make sure you have:

• A neutral wire (required)
• A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network
• A compatible lighting load
• The latest version of the LIFX app

If you are unsure about your wiring or installation, we recommend using a qualified electrician.

The LIFX Dimmer supports:

• Single-pole installations
• Three-way installations using one LIFX Dimmer and one regular switch
• Three-way installations using two LIFX Dimmers

Four-way and larger multi-way installations are not currently supported. 

Choosing the Correct Load Type

During setup, the LIFX app will ask what type of load is connected.

Choosing the correct load type is essential for proper operation.

Smart Light

Select Smart Light whenever the connected load consists of LIFX smart lights.

In Smart Light mode:

• Connected LIFX lights remain continuously powered.
• Brightness and colour are controlled digitally through the LIFX app.
• All four buttons become programmable smart controls.

LIFX smart lights should always be configured using Smart Light mode.

Dimmable Load

Choose Dimmable Load when controlling compatible dimmable LED, incandescent or halogen lighting.

In this mode, the Dimmer uses traditional TRIAC dimming to control brightness.

Switchable Load

Choose Switchable Load when controlling non-dimmable lighting that only requires physical on/off switching.

Using the LIFX Dimmer with LIFX Smart Lights

When controlling LIFX smart lights:

• Configure the Dimmer as Smart Light in the LIFX app.
• Select the LIFX lights or group you want the Dimmer to control.
• The connected lights remain fully powered at all times.
• Brightness, colour and smart functions are controlled digitally.

Do not configure LIFX smart lights as a Dimmable Load.

Compatible Lighting

The LIFX Dimmer supports:

• Dimmable LED lighting
• Incandescent lighting
• Halogen lighting
• Non-dimmable lighting (when configured as Switchable Load)
• LIFX smart lights (when configured as Smart Light)

The LIFX Dimmer should not be used with:

• Power outlets
• Fluorescent lighting
• Motors or fans
• Transformer-powered appliances
• Non-dimmable bulbs configured as Dimmable Load

Dimming Performance

When controlling traditional dimmable lighting, the Dimmer provides approximately a 10–100% dimming range.

Some third-party LED bulbs may:

• Flicker
• Shimmer
• Buzz
• Have a reduced dimming range

This depends on the individual bulb manufacturer and is common across many LED dimming systems. 

Customising the Buttons

The LIFX Dimmer includes four programmable controls:

• Main paddle
• Brighten button
• Dim button
• Top button

Each button supports:

• Single press
• Double press
• Press and hold

Available actions depend on the selected Load Type.

When configured in Smart Light mode, all four buttons can be assigned custom actions using the LIFX app.

Light Bar

The integrated light bar contains eight addressable LED segments.

Depending on your configuration it can:

• Display brightness level
• Show the on/off status of the connected load
• Reflect the brightness and on/off state of connected LIFX lights

The colour and brightness of the light bar can also be customised in the LIFX app.

LED Status Indicators

Matter Compatibility

The LIFX Dimmer supports Matter over Wi-Fi.

It can be paired with supported Matter ecosystems, including:

• Apple Home
• Amazon Alexa
• Google Home
• SmartThings

A compatible Matter controller may be required depending on your chosen ecosystem.

The LIFX app does not require a separate hub.

Rebooting or Factory Resetting

To reboot or factory reset the Dimmer:

1. Press and hold all four buttons.
2. Release during the blue flash (approximately 5–8 seconds) to reboot.
3. Release during the fast flashing red indicator (approximately 10–15 seconds) to perform a factory reset.

A factory reset removes the stored Wi-Fi credentials and device configuration. 

Common Setup and Control Issues.

The Dimmer controls other LIFX lights but not the lights connected to its own circuit

If your LIFX Dimmer successfully controls other LIFX smart lights in your home but does not correctly control the LIFX smart lights connected to its own electrical circuit, first verify that the connected load has been configured as Smart Lightin the LIFX app.

When LIFX smart lights are connected directly to the Dimmer, they should always be configured as Smart Light rather than Dimmable Load. Selecting the wrong Load Type can prevent the connected lights from operating correctly.

If the Load Type is already set correctly, confirm that the intended LIFX lights were selected during setup and that the lights remain powered and connected to Wi-Fi.

The connected lights flash, flicker or repeatedly turn on and off

If the connected lights repeatedly flash, flicker or cycle on and off after installing the Dimmer, verify that the correct Load Type has been selected.

LIFX smart lights should always be configured as Smart Light. Traditional dimmable lighting should be configured as Dimmable Load, while non-dimmable lighting should be configured as Switchable Load.

Using the wrong Load Type may cause unstable operation or unexpected behaviour.

The Dimmer appears in the LIFX app but does not control the connected lights

If the Dimmer can be added to the LIFX app but does not control the lights connected to its own circuit, check:

• The selected Load Type is correct.
• The connected lights were assigned correctly during setup.
• The wiring matches the installation guide.
• The connected load is compatible with the selected operating mode.

The Dimmer powers on but cannot be discovered during setup

If the LED light bar is illuminated but the Dimmer cannot be discovered by the LIFX app or another Matter platform, ensure that:

• The Dimmer is within its Matter commissioning window.
• Your phone is connected to the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
• Bluetooth is enabled on your phone.
• The Dimmer has been factory reset if required before attempting setup again.

I'm using LIFX smart lights with my LIFX Dimmer

When using the LIFX Dimmer with LIFX smart lights:

• Always configure the connected load as Smart Light.
• Do not configure LIFX smart lights as a Dimmable Load.
• The connected lights should remain continuously powered.
• Brightness and colour are controlled digitally through the LIFX app.

If LIFX smart lights are configured as a Dimmable Load, they may flicker, become unresponsive, or not operate as expected.

Troubleshooting

Lights flicker, shimmer or buzz

Check that:

• The correct Load Type is selected.
• The connected bulbs are compatible with TRIAC dimming.
• All wiring connections are secure.
• The connected load is within the supported wattage.
• LIFX smart lights are configured as Smart Light, not Dimmable Load.

Some LED bulbs may still have a limited dimming range depending on the manufacturer.

My LIFX smart lights don't behave correctly

If your LIFX smart lights:

• Flicker
• Buzz
• Go offline
• Stay at full brightness
• Do not respond correctly

check that the Dimmer has been configured as Smart Light in the LIFX app.

Using Dimmable Load with LIFX smart lights is not supported and may result in unstable operation or reduced bulb lifespan.

The Dimmer controls other LIFX lights but not the lights connected to its own circuit

Verify that:

• The connected load has been configured as Smart Light.
• The correct LIFX lights have been selected during setup.
• The Dimmer has completed onboarding successfully.
• The connected lights have power and remain online.

The Dimmer works manually but appears offline in the app

This usually indicates a network connection issue.

Check that:

• Your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network is available.
• Your Wi-Fi password has not changed.
• The Dimmer has adequate Wi-Fi signal.
• Your router is operating normally.
• The LED indicator is not flashing red (Wi-Fi) or orange (Cloud).

The LED light bar doesn't illuminate

Check that:

• A neutral wire is connected.
• The Dimmer is receiving power.
• Wiring matches the installation guide.
• The circuit breaker has not tripped.

• Exceeding maximum load ratings
• Misuse
• Operation outside the published specifications
