LIFX Permanent Outdoor Lights are designed for long-term architectural lighting on eaves, fences and outdoor structures. This guide covers how to mount the lights using screws or adhesive, route cables safely outdoors, and connect everything using the waterproof coupler system.
What’s in the box
Permanent Outdoor Light segments
Mounting brackets
Screws (varies by region)
Waterproof connectors + collars
Power supply + control box
Extension cable (if included)
Splice kit (on selected kits)
Before you begin
Choose where you want to install the lights (eaves, fence line, pergola, fascia, etc.) and check:
there's a GFCI/RCD-protected outdoor outlet nearby
surfaces are clean and dry
the layout allows the required minimum 50 cm spacing between LEDs
the total run length does not exceed 120 W / 200 ft (approx.) depending on your kit
all connectors can be kept above ground level
Take a moment to lay out your plan before committing to brackets or adhesive.
Installation Method 1 — Screw Mounting (Recommended for long-term installs)
Hold the mounting bracket against the surface.
Use outdoor-rated screws to secure each bracket.
Snap the light segment into the mounted bracket.
Continue placing brackets at even intervals along the route.
Screw mounting gives the most durable result and is strongly recommended in extreme temperatures or wet climates.
Installation Method 2 — Adhesive Mounting (For smooth, sealed surfaces)
Use the included adhesive pads if your surface is:
smooth
clean
dry
non-porous
To install:
Apply the adhesive pad to the bracket.
Press the bracket firmly against the surface for several seconds.
Snap the light segment into place.
Avoid adhesive mounting on rough or dusty surfaces, or in areas with significant heat or moisture.
Connecting the waterproof connectors
Each segment links together using a weather-resistant connector.
Align the two cable ends.
Push them together firmly until fully seated.
Tighten the threaded collar by hand until snug.
Ensure there are no visible gaps in the collar.
Note: Keep all connectors above ground level and away from spots where water may pool.
Using the Splice Kit (If included)
Some Permanent Outdoor Light kits allow you to shorten or customise the layout using the splice kit.
Cut only at designated cut points.
Strip back the insulation as shown in the manual.
Insert wires by colour into the splice block.
Tighten the clamp and seal the splice housing.
Install the waterproof sleeve over the splice.
A splice should never sit on the ground or in a gutter where water can collect.
Power supply placement
Mount the controller/power box in a protected outdoor location.
Keep it off the ground and away from direct water exposure.
Do not cover the power supply — it needs airflow.
Use the included screws or adhesive to secure it.
Connect the low-voltage cable to the power supply.
Plug the supply into a GFCI/RCD outlet.
The lights should power on immediately once connected.
Outdoor routing tips
Leave small loops of slack to allow for temperature expansion.
Use cable clips to keep runs tidy and avoid strain on connectors.
Avoid burying low-voltage cable deeper than 15 cm / 6 inches.
Do not run cables through gutters or areas prone to water accumulation.
Keep cabling away from sharp edges and moving parts (e.g., gates).
After installation
Once mounted and powered:
open the LIFX app
add your Permanent Outdoor Lights
complete setup normally
If the lights don’t appear, recheck the connector collars and confirm the transformer is receiving power.
Resetting Permanent Outdoor Lights
To reset:
turn the transformer off and on five times
the lights will pulse white to indicate setup mode
Troubleshooting basics
Part of the run is dark
Usually a loose connector or collar not fully tightened.
Check that each waterproof coupler is fully seated.
Flickering or intermittent lighting
Often caused by overloading the transformer or long, unsupported runs.
Check total wattage and review extension length limits.
Dropouts / WiFi issues
Outdoor range may be limited by walls or distance.
Add an outdoor WiFi AP or reposition the router if needed.
