LIFX bulbs install the same way as standard household bulbs. This guide covers the small but important things to check so your light powers up correctly before you start the setup process.
This applies to all screw-in and plug-in LIFX models, including A-shape, BR, Candle (E12/E14), Tube, PAR/Reflector and similar variants.
Check the fixture
LIFX bulbs work best with:
standard on/off switches
open or ventilated fixtures
stable mains power
sockets that match the bulb type (E26, E27, B22, E12, E14)
Avoid using:
wall dimmers
smart switches
low-voltage transformers designed for halogen lamps
fully enclosed fixtures unless LED-rated
These can cause flickering, buzzing or poor performance.
Install and power on your bulb
Fit the bulb into the socket and restore power at the switch.
The bulb should illuminate within a few seconds, normally with a steady white glow. This means it’s ready to be paired in the LIFX app.
If the bulb doesn’t light:
check the wall switch or lamp switch
confirm the socket has power
make sure the bulb is seated firmly
No need to reset anything at this stage unless the bulb was previously paired.
If you’re installing multiple bulbs
Power them on one at a time.
This makes setup smoother and prevents the app from detecting several unconfigured bulbs at once.
After installation
Once the bulb is powered and lit, open the LIFX app and follow the steps for your platform.
If the bulb doesn’t appear during setup, you can reset it by turning it off and on five times to return it to setup mode.
Good to know
Outdoor use requires fixtures rated for weather exposure
Some decorative fixtures reduce brightness due to glass tinting or diffusion
In ceiling fans or vibrating fixtures, check the bulb is firmly seated to prevent flicker.
Avoid upside-down placement in enclosed fixtures unless they allow for heat ventilation.
