Installing LIFX Outdoor String Lights
LIFX Outdoor String Lights are designed for patios, pergolas and entertainment areas where you want durable, weather-resistant ambient lighting. This guide covers mounting the string, positioning the controller, and safely connecting the waterproof cables outdoors.
What’s in the box
String light segments
Controller and power supply
Waterproof connectors + threaded collars
Mounting clips or hooks (varies by region)
Extension cable (if included)
Before you start
Plan your layout and check:
the power supply can reach a GFCI/RCD-protected outdoor outlet
mounting points (hooks, beams, pergolas) are solid and weather-safe
you have enough clips or ties for support
connectors can be placed above ground level and away from standing water
Lay the string out fully before mounting to confirm spacing and total reach.
Mounting the string lights
Outdoor String Lights need regular support along their length to prevent sagging and cable strain.
Mounting options
Screw-in hooks
Pergola beams
Railing clips
Weather-safe cable ties
Tension wire (recommended for long spans)
To install
Start at the end closest to the controller.
Hang the string gradually, supporting it every 50–70 cm.
Avoid stretching the cable tightly — let it hang with gentle curves.
Keep bulbs clear of hot surfaces and moving parts.
If you’re spanning between posts or beams, tension wire gives the cleanest look and prevents the string from carrying weight.
Connecting the waterproof couplers
Each segment connects with an outdoor-rated connector.
Align the arrows or markers.
Push firmly until fully seated.
Tighten the threaded collar by hand until snug.
Confirm there are no visible gaps in the collar.
Important:
Do not leave connectors touching the ground, buried, or sitting where water may pool; they must stay raised and oriented downward where possible so water sheds away.
Placing the controller and power supply
Mount the controller in a protected area; on a wall, beam or under-cover section.
Keep it off the ground and out of direct rain exposure.
Ensure the low-voltage cable is supported and not hanging by the weight of the controller.
Route cables neatly using outdoor clips if needed.
Plug into a GFCI/RCD-protected outlet.
Once powered, the string lights should illuminate immediately.
Outdoor installation tips
Keep connectors above ground level at all times.
Avoid routing cables through gutters or places where water can pool.
Leave slight slack between mounting points to handle temperature expansion.
If mounting under a roof, give the bulbs clearance from the rafters or beams above.
In windy areas, use additional clips to prevent movement.
After installation
With everything mounted and powered:
open the LIFX app
add the light to your home
follow the setup flow
If the lights don’t appear in the app, double-check cable seating and confirm the transformer is powered.
Resetting Outdoor String Lights
Reset using the same pattern as other low-voltage outdoor products:
turn the transformer off and on five times
the lights will pulse white to enter setup mode
Troubleshooting basics
Part of the string is dark
Usually a loose or partially seated connector.
Tighten the collar and reseat the connection.
Entire string won’t light
Check the controller connection
Confirm outlet power
Ensure the transformer isn’t overloaded
Flickering or intermittent power
Loose connectors are the most common cause
Long cable runs may need additional support to avoid tension
WiFi issues
Outdoor installations are often at the edge of WiFi range
Consider moving the router, adding an extender or using an outdoor access point
