Universal guidelines for bulbs, Lightstrip, Neon Flex, Beam, Downlights, and outdoor lighting.
These recommendations apply to all LIFX products, regardless of type. Following them helps ensure secure mounting, stable power, and reliable long-term performance before you continue setup in the LIFX app.
Check your power source
LIFX products perform best when powered by:
standard on/off switches
full-voltage mains power (no dimmers or halogen transformers)
stable outlets without smart-switch cutoffs
Avoid:
wall dimmers
smart switches that cut power
low-voltage transformers designed for halogen lamps
These can cause flickering, buzzing or dropouts.
Choose the right fixture or mounting surface
Where you mount your product matters. For best results:
use open or ventilated fixtures for bulbs
avoid fully enclosed fittings unless LED-rated
clean surfaces before applying adhesive strips or clips
avoid textured or dusty walls when using adhesive-based mounts
don’t force products around tight corners they’re not designed for
If using adhesive outdoors, secure with screws where possible for long-term support.
Cable and controller placement
Controllers, connectors and power supplies should be:
supported and not hanging by the cable
kept clear of sharp bends or pinch points
placed where they won’t be stepped on or pulled
protected from direct rain when used outdoors
A little slack in the cable reduces strain and improves connector reliability.
Heat and airflow considerations
Good airflow helps electronics stay healthy.
For best results:
avoid installing bulbs upside-down in tightly enclosed fixtures
keep strips and neon away from hot surfaces
don’t bury controllers inside cabinets without ventilation
Even small airflow improvements help extend product life.
Vibration and movement
If installing bulbs or lights near ceiling fans or vibrating fixtures:
make sure everything is firmly seated
check connections occasionally if the area vibrates regularly
Weak contact points can cause intermittent power loss.
Outdoor installation notes
For outdoor-rated products:
keep connectors above ground level
avoid mounting near standing water
use screws instead of adhesives for long-term installs
mount controllers somewhere sheltered
leave slight slack along routes to allow for temperature expansion
Outdoor environments shift more with heat, moisture and movement, so secure mounting is key.
Handling extensions, jump cables and accessories
When using accessories:
ensure connectors are fully seated
avoid sharp bends close to couplers or cut points
support long runs so cables aren’t carrying weight
follow maximum supported lengths to prevent dimming
Good cable management keeps everything running smoothly.
After installation
Once your light is mounted and powered on, continue setup in the LIFX app.
If something doesn’t light up as expected, double-check connectors, wiring and mounting before resetting the product.
