LIFX Outdoor String Lights are built for patios, gardens and outdoor living spaces. This guide covers the physical installation steps so the lights hang securely, stay weather-resistant and are ready for setup in the app.
Plan your layout
Lay the string lights out first to get a sense of spacing and cable length.
Check that:
the power supply can reach a weatherproof outlet
the controller location is sheltered
the string can hang without pulling or over-tightening
you have hooks, clips or cable ties ready
Measure the full span before mounting to avoid sagging or excessive tension later.
Mounting points
String lights work best when supported at regular intervals.
Common mounting options include:
screw-in outdoor hooks
gutter clips
railing clips
cable guides
zip ties around beams or pergolas
Space the supports evenly, especially near the controller end where most of the weight sits.
Avoid mounting lights so tightly that they form a straight line with no slack—gentle curves look better and protect the wiring.
Hang the string lights
Start from the end closest to the controller or power outlet.
Work your way along the planned route, securing each section as you go.
For best results:
keep the cable supported along its full length
avoid sharp bends in the wiring
make sure bulbs aren’t resting on surfaces that could get hot
avoid hanging the lights where swinging doors or gates could hit them
If installing between two posts, consider using a tension wire to carry the weight and clip the lights along it.
Controller and power placement
The controller and power supply should be:
sheltered from direct rain
off the ground
free from cable strain
within reach of a weatherproof (IP-rated) outlet
Use drip loops (a downward cable bend before the controller) to prevent water running into connectors.
Once powered, the string lights should illuminate evenly, typically in a steady white glow, which means they’re ready for app setup.
Outdoor considerations
Outdoor environments can shift with temperature, moisture and movement. A few tips:
leave a small amount of slack between mounting points
avoid installing lights where water pools or collects
secure excess cable so it doesn’t flap or twist in the wind
make sure connectors aren’t sitting in planter beds or soil
don’t bury the power supply or controller
After installation
Once mounted and powered, open the LIFX app to begin setup.
If the lights don’t appear, reset them by turning the power off and on five times.
