What is a Location?
Setting a Location will help you create your control dashboard for your home or office. It will be the main place from which you control all of your rooms (as groups) or your individual lights. Having a 'Location' for your home will allow you to control all the lights together and separately in one place. If you're new to LIFX you'll probably have one Location, but if you are also fitting out your office or other buildings/spaces, you might have two or more.
How do I create my first Location?
When claiming your very first LIFX lights to your account, you will be guided through a setup where you must create at least one 'Location'. Location is the highest level of grouping for your LIFX products and tells us which products are being used in a particular building as a single 'lighting environment'.
Within a Location, each light will also be given a 'Group' - we usually think about these groups inside a Location as rooms. The group is a collection of lights you would want to be able to quickly switch on and off together, kind of like a wall switch. You will also give each light a unique light name during setup, so you know which one you're controlling as an individual light for occasions you may need to do that.
If you want to know more about how to add LIFX products, you can find out more here.
The default 'Location' is 'My Home'. The default Group is 'My Room'. You can get creative with how you name yours, but keep in mind that each 'Location' will have its own Dashboard, Schedules, and Scenes, so a Location should be used as a master control space. If you have lights in different residences or buildings that you would like separate dashboards and schedules for, you can do this by using multiple Locations that can then be controlled by the same account. This means the lights don't turn on at work when you turn on all the lights at your home.
Re-naming and customising your Location:
1. Tap the location name in the top left of the main dashboard.
(If you have more than one location, you will need to do this twice, once to open the list and click the name label to access the Location's control screen)
2. Tap the menu in the upper right , click on 'location settings', and rename the location. You can also change the image used to represent your location here.
Adding a new Location:
1. Choose the light you would like to be the first to move to the new location
(you can't have an empty location, so you will need at least one light per location to create one).
2. Tap the name tag of the light () to access the control screen for that light
3. Tap the menu in the upper right , to access this light's settings
4. Tap the Location name, and choose 'new location'. Name this location when prompted.
5. The new Location should be auto-selected (you will see a green dot next to it), so hit 'Save'.
You can now access this Location by tapping the location name in the top left of the main dashboard to bring up the different locations attached to your account.
Moving lights to a different Location:
1. Choose the light you would like to be the first to move to the new location
2. Tap the name tag of the light () to access the control screen for that light
3. Tap the menu in the upper right , to access this light's settings
4. Tap the Location name, and select your preferred location from the list, then Save.
Removing a Location:
You must have at least one Location for your lights to sit in, and all lights must have a Location. If you have more than one Location, but you want to move lights to another one or remove it, you will need to reassign the location of each light.
1. Expand any groups at the 'Location' so you can see each light's name.
2. Tap the name tag of the first light () to access the control screen for that light
3. Tap the menu in the upper right , to access this light's settings
4. Tap the Location name, and select your preferred location from the list, then Save.
5. Repeat this process until completing the last light. The Location will now be removed.
