If you're having trouble setting up a Matter-compatible LIFX light, the steps below can help you identify where the process is getting stuck.
Matter pairing and discovery in the LIFX app are separate processes. A light may successfully connect to Apple Home or another Matter platform but still need to be discovered or have its setup completed in the LIFX app.
The appropriate troubleshooting steps depend on where the problem occurs.
1. Matter setup fails in Apple Home or another platform
If your light cannot complete Matter setup, start with these checks:
- Check the setup code. Matter-compatible LIFX products use a Matter QR code featuring the Matter logo and an 11-digit numerical code. An eight-digit code with a house icon identifies a legacy HomeKit setup code, not a Matter code.
- Confirm the setup requirements. Make sure your phone, operating system and smart-home platform support Matter. For Apple Home, refer to the current LIFX Apple Home setup guide. Ensure Bluetooth and Location Services are enabled where required by the setup process.
- Check the pairing window. On supported LIFX devices, Matter pairing is available for approximately 15 minutes after the pairing window opens.
- Reopen the pairing window. If it has expired, turn the light off using its normal power source, wait five seconds, then turn it back on. This opens a new 15-minute pairing window on supported devices.
- Try pairing again. Use the device's original Matter QR code or 11-digit numerical setup code.
A factory reset is not normally the first troubleshooting step. The appropriate recovery procedure depends on the product and how far setup progressed.
For more information, see Check Your LIFX Matter Pairing Status.
2. Matter setup succeeds, but the light is missing from the LIFX app
You may see a message similar to:
The light has been successfully added to Matter, but a matching LIFX light could not be found on the network.
This indicates that Matter commissioning succeeded, but the LIFX app could not discover the corresponding light to complete its setup process.
Try the following:
- Check for Finish Setup. Open the LIFX app and look for a Finish Setup option associated with the light. If available, follow the prompts.
- Restart the LIFX app. Close and reopen the app, then check whether the light or Finish Setup option appears.
- Power-cycle the light. Turn the light off using its normal power source, wait approximately five seconds, then turn it back on. Allow it time to reconnect before checking the LIFX app again.
- Check local network connectivity. Make sure your phone and light are connected to the same local network, or to networks configured to permit communication between them. Your phone may use 5 GHz Wi-Fi while the light uses 2.4 GHz, provided local communication is allowed.
- Check for network restrictions. Guest Wi-Fi, client/AP isolation, VLAN restrictions or certain advanced router settings can prevent devices from discovering one another.
- Temporarily disable VPN connections. If your phone uses a VPN, temporarily disconnect it and check whether the light becomes discoverable.
If the light works correctly in Apple Home, don't immediately factory-reset it or repeat Matter commissioning solely because it is missing from the LIFX app.
A factory reset may be appropriate if the light has outdated Wi-Fi credentials, such as after changing your Wi-Fi network name or password, or if further product-specific troubleshooting identifies a need to reset.
For additional network troubleshooting, see Light Not Showing in the App: Network Visibility Issues.
3. The light appears in the LIFX app but isn't working through Matter
A light appearing in the LIFX app does not necessarily mean it has been successfully commissioned into a Matter platform.
To check its Matter status:
- Open the LIFX app and select the light.
- Tap the three-dot menu and open Light Settings.
- Scroll to the Matter section.
Depending on the device and its current state, the app may display:
- Paired: The device is paired through Matter.
- Unpaired: The device supports Matter but is not currently paired.
- Not Discovered: The app cannot currently determine the device's Matter pairing status.
If there is no Matter section, the device may not support Matter in its current hardware or firmware configuration.
If the light is paired but unavailable in Apple Home or another Matter platform:
- Confirm the light is powered on and connected.
- Check whether the Matter platform reports it as offline or unresponsive.
- Close and reopen the relevant smart-home app.
- Check that the platform's required hub or controller is available and connected, where applicable.
- Follow the platform's troubleshooting instructions if the device remains unavailable.
If the issue continues, contact LIFX Support before resetting a device that is otherwise working correctly in the LIFX app.
Please note: A status of "Not Discovered" means the device was previously paired with Matter but cannot currently be discovered by the LIFX app. This does not necessarily mean the Matter pairing has been lost. However, if the device has since been factory reset, its previous pairing may no longer be valid.
4. Adding a light to another Matter platform
Matter allows compatible devices to be shared between supported smart-home platforms using a feature commonly called multi-admin.
This is different from ordinary LIFX app discovery.
For example, a light that has already been commissioned into Apple Home may need to be shared with another Matter controller if you want that controller to manage it through Matter.
However, if Matter setup has already succeeded and the LIFX app is simply unable to discover the corresponding LIFX light, multi-admin sharing should not automatically be treated as the solution.
The correct approach depends on how the light was originally set up and whether you're trying to complete LIFX app discovery or add another Matter controller.
For detailed instructions, see Share LIFX Matter Devices Across Platforms.
Still having trouble?
If the issue continues, contact LIFX Support with the following information:
- Your LIFX product model.
- The Matter platform you're using, such as Apple Home, Google Home or another compatible platform.
- Whether Matter setup completed successfully.
- Whether the light appears and can be controlled in the LIFX app.
- Any error messages displayed during setup.
- Your router or Wi-Fi system make and model.
LIFX Support may also request diagnostics from the LIFX app after the issue has been reproduced.
Providing these details helps us identify the appropriate next steps without unnecessarily repeating setup or resetting a working device.
