Getting your light onto Wi-Fi should be simple. To help everything run smoothly, here’s what your network needs before you start pairing.
2.4 GHz band
LIFX lights use the 2.4 GHz band. Most routers broadcast 2.4 and 5 GHz together, which is fine. You do not need to split them unless your router has unusual compatibility settings.
WPA2 security
Your Wi-Fi should use WPA2. Settings like WPA3 only, enterprise networks, hotel networks, or anything that needs a sign in page will not work.
A strong signal where the light is installed
The light needs a solid connection to your router. If the signal drops out during setup or daily use, you may see timeouts, offline messages, or slow control in the app.
Homes with more than a few lights or a wide layout tend to get better results with a mesh system. Mesh networks spread coverage across multiple access points so lights are not struggling to reach a single router at the other end of the house.
One main network
Make sure your phone and the light are on the same home network during setup. Guest networks and isolated networks will stop devices from seeing each other.
Router features that can cause problems
Some routers have settings that block smart home devices. If you run into trouble, check for these options and turn them off while setting up the light:
MAC address randomisation on your phone
VPNs
Wi-Fi isolation
Private relay features
Ad-blockers or filtering modes
IPv6 only mode
If you are using a mesh system, try pairing your first light close to the primary node before installing it in its final location.
