Learn how to connect your LIFX light to your home network using WiFi on an iPhone or iPad. This guide covers the manual setup flow for lights without a Matter or HomeKit QR code.
Onboarding via Wi-Fi
If you prefer not to use Matter or HomeKit for onboarding, you can set-up your device manually over Wi-Fi. This is useful if:
- Your QR code is missing or damaged.
- The QR code is not readable.
- The device is already installed and physically inaccessible.
If your light is an older HomeKit model, power it on (ensure it’s lit) and let it sit for 15 minutes before attempting setup. This waiting period allows the device to automatically exit HomeKit pairing mode, making it ready for setup via other methods.
If you have a newer Matter-enabled LIFX light, you can begin setup immediately — no waiting required. Matter devices are ready to connect as soon as they are powered on.
iOS Onboarding via WiFi step-by-step:
- Plugin the light and power it on.
- Open your LIFX app and tap the + icon in the bottom right of the screen.
- Tap New Product followed by New Light.
- Tap on the link Set Up Device Manually.
- Go to the Wi-Fi Setting of your device.
- Matter: From Other Networks, select the LIFX Light.
- HomeKit: LIFX will initially appear in the Set Up New Device Section, after 15 minutes it will then move to the Other Networks section. From Other Networks, select the LIFX Light.
- Navigate back to the LIFX App.
- Select your Wi-Fi and enter the password.
- Wait until your light is connected via Wi-Fi, this can take up to a minute.
- Finish set-up by selecting a Group (e.g. Bedroom) and give the light a Name (e.g. Bedside Lamp).
- Opt-in or out of any Suggested Routines.
- You're all set.
